At BERGERecotrail, we are driven by a clear objective: to become even more lightweight, advanced, better. Gerhard Berger, entrepreneur and motorsport legend, brings the uncompromising precision and efficiency of motorsport to trailer manufacture, the foundations for which his father Johann Berger had originally laid. Together with Oliver Hoffmann, former board member for technical development at AUDI AG, he has established a culture of innovation that is intended to set new benchmarks: in lightweight technology, sustainability, services and innovation management.
As “the lightweight pioneers”, at BERGERecotrail we stand for:
✔️ Decades of experience in lightweight design
✔️ Technological depth and precision
✔️ Responsibility for people and the environment
✔️ The pioneering spirit, will and courage to explore new avenues
✔️ Strong partnerships that deliver genuine freight transport solutions.
We have deep roots in the region at our factory in Radfeld, Tyrol, and are successful all over Europe: we combine local responsibility with an international perspective and provide visible proof that “Made in Austria” quality is acclaimed on all of Europe’s roads.
At BERGERecotrail, it is more than technology, steel and axles. It is about responsibility – towards our customers, our employees and an industry in the midst of change. As CEO of BERGERecotrail I am convinced that: lightweight is not only a technical advantage. It is key to sustainable progress. We combine engineering skills with genuine practical experience – and do so with a clear goal: to create transport solutions that are economically efficient, resource conserving and fit for the future. BERGERecotrail has its roots in Tyrol, our perspective is European. We are committed together with our partners to become better. A little better every day.
What stimulates me personally is working with a team that designs with passion, builds with precision and leads with integrity. Open in dialogue, clear in objective, honest with each other. Let’s talk – I’m looking forward to it.

Lightweight is in the DNA at BERGERecotrail. Our video shows how BERGERecotrail uses its innovative technology to demonstrably increase efficiency in everyday freight transport operations. The focus is on the great potential for savings open to fleet managers – from reduced fuel consumption to more payload. Gerhard Berger, co-shareholder and motorsport legend, and Oliver Hoffmann, CEO, describe the essence of the company.
HISTORY
Everything began with the company founder, Johann Berger. He drove trucks carrying Italian marble over the Alps. One thought kept running through his head: “If the semi-trailer truck was lighter, it could carry more weight per delivery and the number of journeys would be reduced.”
DEVELOPMENT
Berger built up its know-how in payload optimisation over many decades. The high point of this development is the BERGERecotrail semi-trailer, which maximises stability while minimising weight through its innovative design. Weighing less than 4.7 tonnes, the semi-trailer is among the lightest in its class.
The modern production and fabrication building at BERGERecotrail has been a paragon of precision, efficiency and innovatory power since 2019. Designed as state-of-the-art, the facility brings together all the main processes under one roof – from design and fabrication through to final assembly. The production halls use highly automated equipment and the very latest welding and laser technologies.
Foundation and history
Johann Berger very soon recognised the opportunities of Tyrol as a suitable location - a central position between the marble quarries near Verona and customers in Germany. He designed semi-trailers with a particularly low tare weight, which meant more marble could be loaded than was possible on his competitors´ trucks.
1994–2007
From this emerged Berger Fahrzeugtechnik in 1994, the third independent enterprise within the Berger group of companies. In 2007, over 650 “Berger light” units (previous model BE) were produced.
2008–2009
Berger Fahrzeugtechnik was almost destroyed by the economic crisis, but the shareholders decided to pursue a forward strategy and develop a new lightweight semi-trailer. As a result, the innovative BERGERecotrail® product was developed and introduced onto the market.
2010
The first BERGERecotrail trailer, with a tare weight of 4.7 tonnes, left the production facility in Radfeld.
2016–2020
In 2016, we produced over 1,000 BERGERecotrail units for the first time. This meant that the Radfeld site had now become too small and an expansion of the production facility was planned and then implemented. Start of construction: 2017, completion: Feb. 2019
2024
Schmitz Cargobull AG has been a 49 % shareholder in BERGERecotrail since 2024. This is a powerful statement of commitment from both companies to a common vision: to make the future of transport lighter, more efficient and more sustainable.
2025
The new “Evolution Generation” of BERGERecotrail in cooperation with Schmitz Cargobull combines an ultralight chassis with a highly functional body.
Strategic partnership with Schmitz Cargobull AG
The best of two worlds.
Schmitz Cargobull AG has been a 49 % shareholder in BERGERecotrail since 2024. This is a powerful statement of commitment from both companies to a common vision: to make the future of transport lighter, more efficient and more sustainable.
In this partnership, we combine two strengths: BERGERecotrail brings more than 60 years of lightweight design expertise, ultralight chassis experience and genuine Tyrolean craftsmanship. Schmitz Cargobull, the European market leader in trailer construction, contributes proven vehicle bodies, digital services and a comprehensive service network.
The benefits to you as a customer:
✔ An ultralight chassis with a high payload
✔ Certified, high-capacity bodies (e.g. POWER CURTAIN, VARIOS)
✔ Access to TrailerConnect® telematics, financing & Full Service contracts
✔ Spare parts supply and Europe-wide 24h service through the Cargobull network
✔ Our natural urge to innovate efficient products, fit for the future.
Two brands. One goal. More benefits.
Production plant
The ultramodern production plant is designed for optimum production flow. The gantry cranes were installed such that they can reach every point on the production line. The in-house developed longitudinal beam welding robot enables the highest standard of precision welding operations and achieves welds of quality level B. The geothermally heated building complex constantly maintains the optimum ambient conditions necessary to avoid delays in steel component production. Any residual misalignments of the chassis are precisely corrected to within a few millimetres using induction heaters. Surface preparation of the chassis is done using our automatic sandblasting machine with 16 impellers and ensures high-quality results from the painting process.
Made in Tyrol
We produce and assemble our products completely in Tyrol – from the first weld to the final quality inspection. In this way, we not only maintain the highest fabrication standards but also efficient processes and close cooperation between all departments – everything is done under the one roof. At the same time, we are securing jobs, fostering personal and professional growth and training future skilled employees who embrace their responsibilities.
We obtain our materials and components from selected partners in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Slovakia. This combination of regional production and international procurement guarantees the perfect balance of quality, reliability and innovation. Made in Tyrol. Trusted across Europe.
People at BERGERecotrail
At BERGERecotrail, we are not defined only by high tech and lightweight design. We also have 100 people behind us.
People with completely different paths through life, experiences and countries of origin, who are all linked by one goal: to create better solutions for tomorrow’s freight transport together.
We are a team from Tyrol – and from many parts of Europe. What connects us is a mentality that has existed here for generations: get on with it instead of wait-and-see, speak directly instead of beating around the bush and keep your promises. What counts with us are action, team spirit and the will to get things moving: in the team just as much as on the road. Our site in Radfeld lies in the middle of the Alps, surrounded by nature, mountains and unending possibilities. Anyone working here for us lives and works in a region with a high quality of life, proximity, mountain panoramas and genuine prospects.
Diversity, dependability, dedication: that is BERGERecotrail.
Integrity and values
Behind each BERGERecotrail trailer lie not only engineering and precision, but also integrity. What unites us as a team are and indeed should be the common values firmly embedded by Johann and Gerhard Berger.
e for explicit.
We make explicit decisions and stand by them, even when it is uncomfortable. Half-heartedness is not an option. We progress with integrity, direction and the will to win. Just as in motorsport, this needs courage, speed and determination. Never standing still, we keep right on to the end.
e for engaged.
We work not only with skill but also with engagement. We believe in what we do and that we can do it better. We think for ourselves, involve ourselves, accept responsibility. Innovation does not just happen by accident but by the coming together of clever heads who share a wish to get things moving. We are pioneers and behave like them.
e for efficient.
What applies to our products also applies to our work; purposeful, organised, focused. No diversions, no blah, blah, blah. Our declared goal: to deliver what we promise with clear processes, defined responsibilities and met deadlines. We strive to achieve this every day. Efficiency is not a slogan for us; it is what drives us.
e for earnest.
We are honest, direct and reliable: recognised qualities of people from Tyrol. We speak plainly while remaining respectful. At BERGERecotrail, it does not matter where you come from but where you wish to go and the person you are.
The person is the focus with us. Whether in the team or in contact with partners and customers: we listen, trust one another and behave responsibly. Trustworthiness and reliability are part of our daily routine – from the workbench to the boardroom. To be down-to-earth, we must be: forthcoming, sincere and have a positive mindset. Gain pleasure from what we do. Deal openly with one another. Always with a firm wish to become better together.
This is how we work. This is how we build trailers. This is how we shape the future.
By land, on the water or in the air. At Berger Logistik, we make sure freight finds its way better to the customer. Delivered where it is needed. Delivered when it is needed. Delivered how it is needed.
